On November 2, 2024, the Lahore School of Economics hosted a one-day workshop entitled "Lie Symmetry Analysis 2024: Symmetries of Differential, Difference, & Fractional Equations and Their Applications." This workshop served as a valuable platform for M.Phil. and PhD students, as well as researchers, to present their work on symmetry methods and explore their applications across various domains, including Economics, Epidemics, and other mathematical and scientific fields..
The Workshop commenced with an inaugural speech by Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, Rector of the Lahore School of Economics. In his address, Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry underscored the significance of mathematics in interdisciplinary studies, pointing out the increasing interest among Lahore School of Economics students in pursuing business and data science alongside mathematics.
The workshop kicked off with a presentation by Prof. Abdul Hamid Kara from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He spoke on the topic of "Symmetries & Conservation Laws of Differential Equations: 1918 to Now and Beyond." Following him, Dr. Rehana Naz from the Lahore School of Economics shared her research titled "Economics to Epidemics and Beyond: Symmetry, First Integrals, Conservation Laws, and Closed-Form Solutions." The session wrapped up with a lively discussion.
The second session showcased Prof. Asghar Qadir from the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, who presented on the "Linearization of Ordinary Differential Equations" and highlighted their significance in symmetry methods. Following a break for lunch and prayer, the workshop continued with Prof. Fiazuddin Zaman from AS-SMS, GCU, Lahore, who explored "Nonlinear Elastic Waves Using Symmetry Analysis."
The later sessions featured presentations by Dr. Musharafa Saleem from UMT, Sialkot, who discussed the "Application of Lie Group Theory in Nonlinear Thermal Radiation and Bio-Convection Flow of Casson-Carreau Nano-Liquid." Dr. Ali Raza from the Lahore School of Economics presented his research on "Double Reduction via Conservation Laws." Other notable presentations included "Classification Approach in Lie Symmetry Analysis" by Prof. Muhammad Ayub from COMSATS University, and "Invariance Analysis and Conservation Laws of Time-Fractional Nonlinear PDEs" by Nida Zinat from AS-SMS, GCU.
The workshop concluded with Akhtar Hussain from the University of Lahore, who presented on "Symmetries, First Integrals, and Integration of Difference Equations."
The participants appreciated the depth of research and discussion, and the event underscored the Lahore School of Economics' commitment to promoting mathematical and interdisciplinary research within Pakistan.
