Modern Retail in Pakistan

Marek Minkiewicz at the outset said that he was one of those foreigners who loved Pakistan and this was his second tenure in this beautiful country. In the last 15 years the landscape of retail has been rapidly changing in Pakistan. In particular, the rise of the middle class has given a fillip to modern retail.

When one enters a new country it is important to look at the inefficiencies of the supply chain because these will provide you with the opportunity to grow.

Marek Minkiewicz, MD of Metro Cash and Carry was in Lahore School of Economics on 30 October 2019 to deliver session in the MBA program on Modern Retail in Pakistan.

Briefly, we can divide modern trade into four formats – we have the Hyper Supermarket which includes big nonfood items, then Big Supermarkets which have small Food and Non Food items, then we have Small Markets which have no food and then we have Convenience stores which cater to basic daily needs.

Metro is both B2B and B2C: Some 60% of Metro is B2B and 40% is B2C, but the profitability is in reverse. Profitability depends on the margins of the products one sells.

Metro is expanding in Pakistan and the Multan store will be the company’s tenth wholesale retail facility in Pakistan and the first one in South Punjab. When we operated the App we found that we got a lot of orders from the Delhi Gate area and the Walled City – cars cannot go inside easily so our delivery people had to carry the stuff themselves.

He also spoke about Metro’s merger with Makro-Habib and said that operations and other functional areas can merge smoothly but it is the peoples and the cultures of the merging entities which can cause problems.

He also gave some useful advice to the MBA cohort and told them they would need to have humility and patience as right away they would not get the big job and the perks that come with a big job. They have to earn it.

Marek is an honored guest and is warmly welcomed at the Lahore School. Metro and the Lahore School also have an MOU between them around education and learning.
