The fourth edition of this bilingual Glossary in Banking and Finance in two volumes by Dr Shakil Faruqi has now been published by Lahore School of Economics, State Bank of Pakistan and Institute of Bankers. Earlier on, three editions in a single volume were published and printed by State Bank of Pakistan in participation with the Institute of Bankers.
The Glossary is helpful not only to those at academic institutions, but it is widely used by print media, legal scholars and lawyers, accountants and auditors. For the Lahore School alumni the Glossary is available at considerable discount. (Sales proceeds are donated it to promote the cause of education and learning in Banking and Finance in Pakistan.)

Mr. Shahid Sattar, SEVP and Group Head Retail Banking at UBL gave a talk to the students of MBA on June 19, 2013. His talk revolved around retail banking and its functions. The speaker said that banking was now both number focused and marketing driven. Lot of innovation and revolution had taken place in the banking sector in the past few years. Foreign banks used to perform quite well in Pakistan but things had changed since the privatization of local banks.

Mr. Shahid Sattar added that two key differentiating factors for any bank included technology and customer service. The speaker enlightened the students on how banks were using social media to advertise. Mr. Sattar shared the structure of a bank and described functions and operations of various departments in a bank. He is depth discussed different areas of retail banking. The speaker explained how products in a bank were created and then marketed and how sales and customer services were managed. He further added that retail banking was a combination of branch banking, consumer products, marketing and consumer lending. Hierarchy of a retail bank was then discussed with the students.

Mr. Sirajuddin Aziz, President, Habib Metropolitan Bank came to Lahore School of Economics to share his experience of banking with the students of MBA II on March 14, 2013. The distinguished guest started with the history of banking in Pakistan and explained how banking sector had gone through different stages since 1947. He threw light on how the sector had flourished in Pakistan over the last decade.
While talking about the different areas of banking, the speaker elaborated on Consumer banking, Corporate banking, SME financing and talked about how these sectors were performing in Pakistan. Mr. Aziz explained the students that although SME was flourishing well in Pakistan’s economy and providing employment to a large number of people, it had the highest default rate.

Mr Naweed Sharif, the Executive Vice President and Regional Corporate Head, United Bank Limited visited the Lahore School on March 06, 2013 to deliver a lecture on Corporate Banking. Addressing the students of MBA 1 (Banking), the distinguished guest began with the role of financial capital in generating sales in a bank. The speaker explained how revenues generated by banks are reinvested, then used to pay off the debts and dividends and then are consumed to repurchase the stocks. The speaker threw light on corporate banking hierarchy and its structure.

Seminar on Banking was held at Lahore School of Economics on April 01, 2011 at Burki Campus. The objective of the seminar was to give the students an understanding of the different areas of banking. Four speakers representing various banks spoke on different areas of banking:
Mr. Abid Sattar, Senior Executive Vice President HBL - Reality Banking
Mr. Talha Saeed, SEVP, Silk Bank - SME Banking
Mr. Arif Srihindi, Consumer Head, Askari Bank - Consumer Banking
Mr. Farooq A.Khan, Corporate Banker MCB Bank - Corporate Banking
Mr. M. R. Mehkari, President Askari Bank was the chief guest. He appreciated the quality of students at the Lahore School and announced scholarships to three MBA students.
The seminar was attended by the deans, faculty members and a large number of students.

Seminar on The Practice of Human Resource Management in the Banking Industry of Pakistan" was held at Lahore School of Economics on Thursday, October 15, 2009. The objective of the seminar was to give the students an understanding of the issues that the HR heads of organizations faced while deciding on policy for an organization and the constraints of implementation in Pakistan’s cultural context.
Five speakers representing various banks spoke on the subject. Aneeq Khawar, COO Silk Bank gave the keynote address. Dr. Razi Azmat, HR Head at HBL gave a detailed presentation on the role of HRM. Mudassar Aqil, HR Head at bank Alfalah threw light on the various areas of HR. Khalid Zaman HR Head at HSBC gave his views on the practice of HRM in the banking industry of Pakistan whereas Muneer Saleem, Group Executive KASB Bank gave the concluding remarks.
Speakers shared their expertise to enrich students learning experience in this interactive seminar which was attended by faculty members, students and guests from the corporate sector.

The experienced guest speaker gave an overview of the banking industry covering history, chain of commands, qualities of a leader, potential, career path, opportunities, planning, challenges in life, and more. The lecture was followed by questions and answers session.
