A roadmap to diversifying Pakistan’s exports: operationalizing the product space

CPEC over the past decade, there has been much written about the reoccurring balance of payments crisis in Pakistan. This discussion has covered a wide range of topics, from the cost of oil imports to boosting exports, from IMF stabilization packages to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Though a comprehensive discussion of how to address the balance of payments problem must address most of these issues. The lack of export diversification in Pakistan has remained a critical impediment to growth in Pakistan. Therefore, the focus of recent research work by a team headed by Dr. Azam Chaudhry of the Lahore School of Economics was to identify potential export areas that address the chronically underperforming export sector. The research team argued that in order to address this issue, it is crucial to identify potential new exports that are not only relatively closer to the current export basket but also those products that have the potential to lead to higher value-added exports.


The researcher team stated that Pakistani export sector is characterized by three important features:

Fourteenth Conference on Recent Advances in Mathematical Methods, Models and Applications (RAMMMA19)

The Lahore School of Economics, Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences hosted, “Fourteenth Conference on Recent Advances in Mathematical Methods, Models and Applications (RAMMMA19)”, on 13th of April, 2019, at the Lahore School’s Burki Campus, Amjad Chaudhry Library.


The goal of this conference was to bring together mathematicians and users of mathematics to talk to each other, to transfer problems, ideas and methods from one community to the other, so as to enhance progress in understanding. The "RAMMMA" tradition has these key features: the number of participants is usually bounded above by 80 with a mix of pure and applied interests; there are no parallel sessions so that all participants focus on each presentation and fully engage in each topic; and there is ample time for discussion of each presentation. The areas of interest of this conference were (but not limited to): Numerical Analysis; Generalization of Intuitionistic fuzzy set with Application in fuzzy sets; Algebraic Linearization; Financial mathematics; Mathematical Biology.

Pakistan must shift to high value-added exports

Economic researchers have said that Pakistan’s balance of payments crisis is a result of less sophisticated, low value-added exports, which have led to a lower economic growth.

Due to capital and high value-added imports, the import bill surpasses export revenues, resulting in an unsustainable current account deficit

They ask whether Pakistan will be able to break out of this cycle of balance of payments crisis if it changed the nature of goods it exported.

Punjab Spatial Strategy and its linkages with Industrial Development


Dr. Azam Chaudhry, Professor and Dean Faculty of Economics, gave the keynote presentation on April 13th, 2019 at a session organized by the Punjab Urban Unit titled “Punjab Spatial Strategy and its linkages with Industrial Development." Dr. Chaudhry presented on his extensive research work on the Pakistani textile sector and the purpose of the session was to engage stakeholders in a wide-ranging dialogue and discussion on growth and development priorities of the provincial government and its future strategic direction.

Lahore School of Economics wins ‘Economist of the Year, 2019’

A team comprised of four students from the BSc Economics and Finance program represented the Lahore School of Economics, at the “Economist of the Year, 2019” competition organized by the Forman Christian College on the 5 the of April, 2019.


Amidst 8 teams of renowned institutions from all over Pakistan, Maria Syed, Ameera Khan, Fizza Rahman, & Muhammad Musa Faraz secured the highest total in the quiz round. In the final round, they presented their policy proposal on how to ameliorate Pakistan’s debt burden in the next 10 years and attained the 1 st  position.
