Basant at Lahore School of Economics

When nip of winters yield to moderate and pleasant spring season and when trees start wearing new leaves, festive frame prevails at the Lahore School of Economics where students and faculty mark the advent of the season with Basant Bash -- kite-flying festival now famous as one of the annual tradition of the School. Over the years it has become an event where above and beyond students and teachers, their friends and families assemble at the Main Campus to be part of this unique occasion. Every one is dressed in colourful attires. Multicolour and decorated kites are flown in the backdrop of traditional music.


This time the Lahore School celebrated Basant January 29. The event started up with kites, and rounded off with music, fun, colour galore and a whole lot in between. The Main Campus of the Lahore School that is known for its beautiful gardens, exquisite environment was specially decorated for the occasion. The whole premises gave a look of a big flower basket. In addition, brightly dressed flocks of folk entertainers performing for no particular audience added new touch to the landscape. In some other corners, music played.

Walking along the walkways -- from spanking new parking spot to the café -- shining in pristine glory gave an idea of aesthetic sense of all those who belong to the Lahore School. Even the bushes and decorative trees were singled out with special kits, giving walkways a dazzling look.

Good food customarily goes with Basant festival. Sizzling and spicy foods -- a mixture of culinary delights by the best food vendors in the city was served to every one.

It was in this milieu that students, faculty and their families flew colourful kites. Calm air and a sunny day were most suitable for kite flying. One could see every one looking up and simultaneously shouting while the kites oscillated in the sky. Even those who were not flying kites were part of the rhythm -- unfazed by cheerful crowd and the bustle.

Lahore School is Pakistan's category “A” university and one of the most productive seats of learning in the country. Away from Lahore School, one can only wonder about how the School celebrates. These are only some of the realities of Basant Bash at the Lahore School of economics.

Lahore School of Economics is celebrating Basat today. Colours and kites have brought the spring (earlier) at the Lahore School. More is coming on this. Stay tuned!

Achievements
January 26, 2005

Ahmad Iqbal Chaudhry, a student of Bsc 1 at the Lahore School of Economics has passion for writing. As a student of Economics, his area of interest is Pakistan economy. Lately, he did his class projects on "Real Estate Boom, Causes and Consequences" and "Secret Behind the Chinese and Indian Miracles; the Catch for Pakistan?" What is more, in addition to doing projects, he wrote articles on both the subjects that appeared in daily the Nation.

Earlier, in Bahria College Islamabad, he was editor Shinawar (college magazine), all rounder for the year 2002-2003 as well as deputy head Student’s Council. He has also done internship in the National Commission for Human Development, Islamabad. Ahmad Iqbal has been offered to work in daily the Nation as a freelance writer for Business Week -- one of the most read sections of the newspaper. "I hope to pursue writing as a healthy and productive activity,” he says.

Management of Pakistan Economy

The Lahore School of Economics is organizing an International Conference on Management of Pakistan Economy on n April 19 – 21, 2005 at its Main Campus. The Conference will bring together a group of distinguished policymakers, academics, and international experts related to economic management. Many of them would be invited to present papers on various aspects of the management of the economy of Pakistan to be discussed by a panel of invited experts followed by an open discussion. Later, all the papers will be published in a special issue of our journal – the Lahore Journal of Economics.

Parking facilities

One can see the little transparent logo of the Lahore School of Economics pasted neatly on the screens of most vehicles these days. These vehicles belong to the students and logo authorizes them to park their vehicles, free of charge, in a reserved spot in the Parking Lot of Liberty Shopping Centre. The reserved spot has capacity of two hundred vehicles under continuous watch by the caretakers.

Lahore School has arranged parking facility for its students in the “Lower D” of the Liberty Market where students can park free from morning (07.30 am) till evening (07.30 pm). The vehicles remain safely parked while the students attend their classes. Vehicle driven by female students are, however, accommodated in the parking place in front of the School.

The value of parking facilities goes far beyond the function of storing vehicles. Students have welcomed this step and happily park their vehicles and walk across to campus. “Now there is no tension on my mind that any traffic management agency will life the car or it will be vandalized while I am sitting in the classroom,” says Haider Abbas of BBA.

The student population is growing and the administration is continuously building additional facilities to accommodate the influx of additional students each admission season. Earlier, spanking new and spacious Car Park has been added at the Main Campus.

Badminton fixture

Lahore School of Economics outclassed LUMS in best of seven badminton matches by 4-1. Matches were played in floodlights at Lahore School City Campus. Total five matches were played out of which Lahore School won four. In men’s single Nabeel beat Aqeel by 15-7, 15-7. Ali Javed and Mustafa Sherdil defeated Saad and Amir by 15-9, 15-10 in men’s double. In mixed double, Ali Javed and Saba Javed Gill pounded Amir and Maliha by 15-0 and 15-9. Amir of LUMS triumphed over Mustafa by 15-11, 11-15 and 15-12. In the last match Nabeel and Najeeb of Lahore School thrashed Rukham and Hussain by 15-5, 15-5.

Basant bash

The Lahore School of Economics is organizing a Spring Festival on the 29th of this month (Saturday). Faculty, students and the families will get together to celebrate basant - a festival to mark the start of the spring. Kites, food, music, fun, lot of colors and much more will be there. You be there!

Academic route best for business

Personal scouting of senior executives and human resources managers in different firms in the corporate sector reveals many are looking to MBAs and business graduates instead in-house developed staff in corporate Pakistan. This is a major shift in the market which relied on non-MBA owners and traditionally trained executives.

Businesses now believe the benefits of business schools does outweigh every thing else in the competitive and technology dependent business world of today.

The programs in best business schools incorporate work-based challenges, coaching and mentoring, alongside more traditional training and development. They are also closely aligned to business challenges and goals, as well as individual development needs.

Findings show that companies, which rely purely on traditional resources training in the past, are eventually becoming dissatisfied because their executives were never exposed to modern education.

The big attraction of an MBA in Lahore School is that here students are put through to learn different ways of doing things, and learn business practices in consonance with the demands of the time.
