Marek Minkiewicz at the outset said that he was one of those foreigners who loved Pakistan and this was his second tenure in this beautiful country. In the last 15 years the landscape of retail has been rapidly changing in Pakistan. In particular, the rise of the middle class has given a fillip to modern retail.
When one enters a new country it is important to look at the inefficiencies of the supply chain because these will provide you with the opportunity to grow.

Over a dozen IMF programmes that Pakistan has entered into in the last 30 years have followed a familiar pattern: an economic crisis; turning to the IMF for relief; much cheering as initial measures lead to some improvement; premature boasts of never returning to the IMF and claims that the ‘begging bowl’ is broken forever; as stabilisation measures bite and public outcry grows, political will to continue stabilisation weakens; reforms are postponed and, in many cases, goodbye IMF; a swift return to imprudent economic policies; hello, IMF it is us again!
After some economic improvements in the first four months of the current IMF programme, we are now at the stage of ‘congratulations’ all around and strong ‘turnaround’ claims buoyed by the positive buzz at the recent Washington IMF/World Bank meeting: ‘Pakistan has turned the corner — well done IMF and Pakistan economic team’. While there is little doubt that the strong policy measures adopted under the IMF programme (and indeed in the nine months before) have borne positive results, the claims at this stage of a ‘turnaround’ are certainly premature, as there is still considerable ground to cover.

Lahore School of Economics hosted its first International Conference on "Language Policy in International Agreements: The Asian Experience with special focus on CPEC" on 9 November 2019. The collation of three groundbreaking studies were presented at the conference with the fundamental objective to explore the implications of CPEC International Agreement on the language practices of stakeholders as there is no formal mutual language policy for CPEC between China and Pakistan; hence a high uncertainty exists about the roles of English, Urdu and local languages with the avant-garde of CPEC and Mandarin. The conference comprised of four sessions, which were attended by both international and domestic delegates, who presented their insightful comments pertinent to its fundamental theme. It is an unprecedented, visionary and a timely study.
Lahore School Pro-Rector, Dr. Azam Chaudhry, extended a warm welcome to the esteemed audience, including eminent scholars, policy-makers, academicians, students and other dignitaries. Dr. Azam stated that one of the key problems in Pakistan especially when it comes to CPEC is lack of language policy framework. Talking about the conference agenda he briefly introduced the audience to the four sessions which included presentations on:

Ms. Sarah Aftab in a wide-ranging session to the MBAs on the importance of data held on 30th September 2019, dwelled on both qualitative and quantitative research, and explained both their mechanics and role in management and marketing. Qualitative research focuses on the why of marketing research, and includes focus groups and ethnographic research, while quantitative research focuses on the what and how of marketing.
Sarah explained that focus groups allow in-depth discussions and exchange of ideas where a “moderator” probes and keeps on probing till he or she reaches a point where he or she things that the answers are justified. The moderator should a) be neutral b) engage everyone in the group – especially the shy ones c) be relatable to everyone (if one is speaking in Punjabi then he should also use Punjabi) and d) summarize conversation and come to a consensus.

Monis Rahman said that when he came back to Pakistan in 2003 the eco-system around him of all that was internet-based was very different - there were 2 m internet users, primarily using modems. At that time people were using billboards, newspapers, brochures, and TVCs to advertise. A newspaper Sunday half-page Ad would cost 12000 USD. According to the famous adage, and one did not know which half of the Ad-spend was being wasted.
He set up Rozee at home with 4 people. He went to the banks in a suit and tie and presented to the presidents of banks his power point sales pitch, suggesting to them that they could hire faster, better and cheaper. The bankers would not believe him that he was asking them to put their brands online.
