Is there a future for export-led growth in Pakistan?

Dr Azam Amjad Chaudhry

(The writer is the dean of the faculty of economics at the Lahore School of Economics and the WTO chair for Pakistan)

Pakistan is again in the midst of an economic crisis. The core issues of a balance of payments crisis, a halt in economic growth, soaring prices, increasing employment and rising poverty are interlinked and require fundamental reforms. However, the immediate problem is simple: Pakistan needs to export more and has financed growth over the last few decades with foreign borrowing, which must now be paid back. What should be just as simple is the answer: Pakistan is experiencing an export crisis and urgently needs a coherent policy to boost exports.

The continuous balance of payments problem in Pakistan can be described as a problem of balance of payments constrained growth, which means that whenever Pakistan grows at more than 4% per annum, we import so much more than we export that we run out of foreign exchange reserves. In many economies, this imbalance is made up through remittances or foreign investment. In the case of Pakistan, the former has stagnated and the latter is nonexistent. So, the only solution is to increase exports with a coherent export-based industrial strategy.

How to manage careers

Mr. Khurram Javaid, CCO Fauji Foods visited the Lahore School of Economics on 18th May 2024 to advise the MBA cohort 2023-24 on how to manage their careers. The session was interactive and Mr. Khurram responded to a variety of questions.

He began with interview management. The interviewing panel attached weight to how much the interviewee knew about the vision, purpose, values and behavior of the company. Interviewees must do research on the organization. They must understand that the interviewers will not ask them rocket-science questions. In fact, the first interview is not technical in nature but is done to ascertain their attitudes.

Interviewees should be well-dressed. They should speak in a structured way, rather than going on and on. It is important that in their answers they reflect ‘attention to detail.’ It is also important that the interviewee connects with the interviewer: some applicants know about the books the interviewer reads (through LinkedIn or through the latter’s friends).

Challenges and Possibilities for Environmental Sustainability with a Focus on Pakistan

Abstracts

Status of water quality and quantity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Dr. Bushra Khan

The Swat and Kabul rivers of northern Pakistan are within an important regional watershed that supports river-based livelihoods and is impacted by untreated effluent discharges and municipal solid waste. Evidence indicates that fish populations are decreasing in these rivers. One potential cause of poor aquatic health is pollution; therefore, we investigated the presence of several contaminants in the river systems and local fish species of both rivers. Total 25 spots on River Swat and 21 on River Kabul were identified as contamination hotspots. Water samples were collected during seasons of high (summer) and low (winter) river flow. CECs (Agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, plasticizers, chemicals in personal care products, and hormones); Heavy Metals (Pb, Cr, Cd and Zn) and Microplastics were quantified. In the Swat River, caffeine, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), butachlor and plasticizers were detected at all sites. In the Kabul River, caffeine and several lasticizers and DEET were detected at all sites. Pharmaceuticals (analgesics and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs) were quantified in both rivers. Microplastic of various nature and sizes in 100% water, sediments and fish samples were detected in Rivers Swat and Kabul.

How the Ad Agency Works

Ms Daniah Ishtiaq, who has some 14 years of experience of working in the advertising industry at Ogilvy, IAL Saatchi & Saatchi, and BBDO visited the Lahore School of Economics on the 13th of May 2024 to deliver a session on ‘How the Ad Agency Works’ to our MBA candidates at the Lahore School of Economics.

Explaining if her business education helped her in her career, she noted that the critical thinking that she developed as a result of the cases she did in her undergraduate and postgraduate programs has helped her in her career. Secondly, when she interacted with the Client on behalf of her Agency, the client trusted her more because of her background in business education. Also, it was easier for her to understand the client-speak around targets etc., something that the ‘creatives’ don’t pick up so quickly and effortlessly.

Grapes of wrath

How I would like to live in the dream world of the neoliberal economist, in which markets are left to determine the exchange rate, where prices of wheat are left to market forces, where consumers are indifferent to eating imported or domestically produced wheat, and inputs like fertilisers are freely available at market prices, free of the monopolies and hoarding that artificially raise prices.

The thoughts of a small farmer?

But the harsh world that confronts us in the Punjab countryside today is very different. For the poor small farmers, who form the vast majority of the province’s nearly 5.5 million rural households with holdings of 12 acres or less, or for small tenant farmers, it is becoming clearer by the day that the government has no intention of purchasing wheat at the announced support price of Rs3,900 per 40 kilograms.

Advertising, Advertising Agencies and How an AD is Made

Ms Daniah Ishtiaq, previously of Ogilvy, IAL Saatchi & Saatchi, and BBDO, and now the co-owner of her own agency, visited the Lahore School of Economics on the 30th of April 2024 to deliver a session on Advertising, Advertising Agencies and How an AD is Made to our undergraduates. Ms Daniah has been working with advertising agencies for some 14 years.

At the outset she asked the class what a good or bad ad were. She discussed the answers and then noted that an ad which met its objectives was a good ad. For companies it might be an ad that generates activity, or is the talk of the town, or forces consumers to purchase the product after watching the ad.
