Pre-requisites for corporate careers

Mr. Adeel Anwar, Director Organizational Excellence, Warid Telecom, was in Lahore School of Economics on June 18, 2015 to deliver a lecture to the graduating MBA class.


The speaker enlightened the students on the pre-requisites for corporate careers. He said that in order to achieve a good career one should have soft skills such as integrity, fair mindedness, a persuasive and congenial personality, ability to cope with conflicting point of view, function under pressure and demonstrate discretion. While talking about hard skills he said basic skills such as core computer proficiency, high impact written and oral communication skills, and incisive analytical skills were very important.

Dare to dream

Mr. Adeel Hashmi, CEO of Lightstorm communications came to Lahore School of Economics on June 23, 2015 to deliver a lecture to the students of the undergraduate programme on taking risks in life and plunging into whatever you are passionate about.



In his talk Hashmi emphasized how youth can be ones biggest asset.“Dare to dream”, he stressed should be your ally. He also talked about the Hollywood film, ‘The Firm’ and believed that is how one’s life is (if he/she does whatever the world expects of him/her). After a certain age you are stuck doing what you started and don’t like. Therefore, he concluded meaningfulness in career choices in life is very important.

How to operate and build brands

Mr. Usman Shahid, Brand Head, Pepsico, visited the Lahore School of Economics on June08, 2015 to deliver a lecture to the graduating MBA class. The topic of discussion was how to operate and build brands. After his past experiences and explaining the techniques used by PepsiCo and other FMCGs, Mr. Shahid shared the story of Mountain Dew.


Mountain Dew had a unique positioning, one which differed from all the other brands in Pakistan. How it linked all its consumer touch points and its positioning. Mr. Usman stated that it was Mountain Dew’s effective brand building that had enabled it to compete with products that were over 50 years old.

Career prospects

Mr. Haroon Waheed, HR Head Fatima Group, was in Lahore School on June 11, 2015 to to deliver a lecture on career prospects to the graduating MBA class.


In his lecture Mr. Waheed discussed in detail how a graduate should market himself for a job. He asked the students whether they would want to work for personal satisfaction or money. According to the speaker the first step to success is the hunger for growth and learning. One should always be eager for success and should not look for short cuts.

Career choices and expectations of the corporate sector from fresh graduates

Mr. Wasif Waseem Ashraf, CEO and founder of 360d Consulting, was invited to the Lahore School of Economics on June 12, 2015 to deliver a talk on career choices and expectations of the corporate sector from fresh graduates, to the graduating MBA class.


In his presentation Mr. Ashraf gave the students some very useful tips as to how a candidate could fetch an interview call and how a resume he said opened the door to opportunities and was used as a marketing tool by painting a positive and factual picture of a person.

Supply Chain

Mr. Sohail Butt, Head of Supply Chain at Nestle visited the Lahore School of Economics on June 15, 2015 to give a lecture on “Supply Chain” to the graduating MBA class. In his lecture Mr. Butt explained the importance of supply chain for an organization.


He said that procurement was very important in supply chain. He then explained inventory and its role in the supply chain. Explaining more in dept he gave examples of the supply chain of some big names like iPhone, Zara Clothing and different milk brands that were available in Pakistan.

Budgeting

Mr. Bilal Khalid Khan, Director Advisory – Frants and Co. Chartered Accountants was invited to give a talk to the graduating MBA class on budgeting on June 17, 2015.


What budget meant? He said that budgeting was a phase of planning for shorter period of time. Budget he said was very important for all firms as well as for the government as it helped control expenses and maximize the wealth of shareholders. It also helped monitor the inflows and outflows of cash.

On Campus Recruitment

The Bank Alfalah top management came to the Lahore School of Economics on June 11, 2015 to conduct a session for the MBA and Undergraduate students majoring in Finance. The top officials who were a part of the Bank Alfalah team consisted of Mr. Yasir Rashid (Group Head of Audit and Inspection Group), Mr. Tahir Khurshid (Head of Audit Retail Group), Mr. Sumair Zafar (Officiating Head of Management Audit and Risk Assets Review) and Mr. Syed Abid Salar (Audit Manager).


Mr. Yasir Rashid, the Group Head of Audit and Inspection Group, began the session with a brief introduction of his Organization. He spoke about the functions and performance of the audit department at Bank Alfalah. He explained how audit has evolved over the years. Mr. Yasir also briefed the students regarding the use of state of the art software for audit by the Bank. Mr. Tahir Khurshid, Head of Audit Retail Group, explained about the role of Islamic banking and asset based financing to students.

Farewell MBA 2015

The Lahore School of Economics hosted a graduating dinner for its MBA class of 2015 at a local hotel on 13 June 2015. The farewell was attended by Dr. Azam Chaudhry, Dean of the School of Economics, Dr. Sohail Zafar, Dean of the Business School, senior faculty and administration members and over 200 MBA and Professional MBA participants. The hallmark of the event was the wonderful and meticulous performances by the different sections of the MBA cohort.


In their performances, the Lahore School MBA participants showed creative videos, enacted dramatic tableaux, sang songs, put up stage performances, and even offered spectacular choreography, to enthusiastic and repeated applause from the audience. That the MBA cohort found time to prepare for these marvelous performances when they were immersed in their intensive and rigorous MBA program is testimony as much to their multifaceted personalities as it is to their bond with the Lahore School.

E-Commerce and Online Advertising

Mr. Zohaib Ali Jamal, Head of Marketing and Operations of TheSouq.com and alumnus of the Lahore School delivered a session to the MBA participants on 12 June 2015 on Online Advertising. The session was part of the Brand and Advertising Management course.


At the outset Zohaib explained that direct marketing was the use of consumer-direct channels to reach and deliver goods and services to customers without using market middlemen. E-commerce, one branch of direct marketing, had reached 13 billion dollars in GCC countries in 2014 from 9 billion in 2012.

Advertising Process

Mr Asad Rizvi, Managing Director of Walter, a division of WPP Marketing Communications, delivered a session on Advertising to the MBAs on June 3, 2015 at the Lahore School.


Asad Rizvi, one of the most senior and well respected Advertising experts in Pakistan, and an old friend of the Lahore School, spoke on the structure and role of advertising as well as on the process of ad-making and the role of an advertising agency.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Lahore School Business Development Center and Lahore School of Entrepreneur and Business Society organized an information session on “Innovation and Entrepreneurship ‘with Mr. Ahsan Rashid, the head of Lahore School Business Development Center on June 11, 2015.


Mr. Ahsan Rashid discussed the issues faced by the graduating batch and the problems of unemployment. He mentioned that these days entrepreneurship is the way to go. The biggest issue that is faced by any entrepreneurs is the lack of working capital and lack of experience that results in the failure for many. He also introduced Business Development Center and assured that they would provide with the hands on support and business related help in the form of networking and aligning.

Commercial Banking

Mr. Adnan Haider, SVP Faysal Funds visited the Lahore School of Economics to deliver a talk on ‘mutual funds and other financial instruments’ to the graduating class of MBA on May 28, 2015. The presentation covered Commercial Banking, retail banking, priority banking and asset management.


Mr. Adnan Haider also discussed the issues faced by banks in Pakistan. The major issue was the high default rate which discouraged banks to issue loans. This affected the bank’s main source of income, which is interest revenue.

Lahore School Corporate Social Responsibility Center Chocolate Milk Drive

The Lahore School of Economics’ Corporate Social Responsibility Center volunteer students visited Friends Public School and distributed MILO – Chocolate Milk - among 550 students at the Friends Public School on the 3 June 2015 and spent time with the young students from Friends Public School.


The visit was very well received by the School’s principal and management, and best of all young students loved being with Lahore School volunteers.

China-Pakistan Economic Corridor International Academic Symposium

On the invitation of the Center for Pakistan Studies of Peking University and the Centers for Pakistan Studies at Sichuan and at Fudan Universities, China, Dr. Aamir Khan of the Lahore School visited Beijing to speak to the International Academic Symposium on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) from 21-23 May 2015.


Some 40 Chinese and 15 Pakistani diplomats, scholars and journalists spoke at the CPEC Symposium. The Chinese speakers included Ambassador. Lu Shulin; Professor Tang Mengsheng of Peking University; Professor Du Youkang, Director Pakistan Study Centre; Fudan University; Mr. Ji Dong Chen, Executive Director Pakistan Study Center Sichuan University; Colonel Pan Zheng, National Defence University, China; Dr. An Hongqi of Jiangsu Normal University; and Mr. Xue Li of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Brand and Advertising Management

Mr. Omer Malik, General Manager Snacks – PepsiCo visited the Lahore School of Economics to deliver a lecture on “Brand and Advertising Management” to the graduating MBA class on May 27, 2015.


Mr. Malik explained how a brand is created and executed. Presentation started with four points of creating and sustaining a successful brand. “Quality, differentiation, profit, consumer preferences, right price, name, recognition, association, trust and innovation are all very important in order to make a brand successful and sustainable,” he said.
