Pakistan's economic situation and Lahore School policy recommendations

The Minister of Finance (Government of Pakistan), Dr. Shamshad Akhter, visited the Lahore School of Economics on July 21st, 2018 to discuss the current economic situation in Pakistan as well as hear policy recommendations from the Lahore School research team.


The Minister was hosted by the Rector of the Lahore School of Economics, Dr Shahid Amjad Chaudhry who gave his views of potential economic stabilization policies. The Rector’s recommendations were followed by presentations on growth and stabilization policies by Dr. Moazzam Mahmood, Dr. Azam Chaudhry, Dr. Ayesha Afzal. Dr. Kumail Rizvi and Dr. Zahid Riaz.

Lahore School PhD Students Attend Summer Workshop at Paris School of Economics

Farah Said, Maryiam Haroon, Zunia Saif Tirmazee  , Rabia Arif and Nida Jamil, PhD students from the Department of Economics of the Lahore School of Economics visited Paris in Summer 2018 from 18th June to 29th June to attend a two week Summer School Program organized by the Paris School of Economics.


The students enrolled in courses on Microeconometrics, and Migration and International Trade (in week 1) and Experimental Economics - Empirical tools and methods to investigate economic behavior (in Week 2). The summer school was an excellent opportunity for the Lahore School PhD students to benefit from research -oriented teaching by leading experts in their fields.

Researchers from Lahore School of Economics Present at State Bank of Pakistan

Dr. Waqar Wadho and Farah Said presented at a seminar on “Stimulating Firm Productivity and Growth” on March 6, 2018. The seminar was jointly organized by International Growth Centre (IGC), Consortium for Development Research (CDPR), State Bank of Pakistan and Institute for Business Administration Karachi (IBA) at the State Bank of Pakistan, Karachi. Seminar attendees included researchers at the State Bank, IBA, LUMS, Federal Board of Revenue, Sindh Board of Investment and K-Electric, among others.


Dr Wadho presented his joint work with Dr Azam Chaudhry, on the innovation in the Textile Sector or Pakistan. Ms. Said presented preliminary results from a behavioral intervention designed to increase access to solar electricity in off-grid areas of Sindh.

Modified Variance Ratio Test for Autocorrelation in the Presence of Heteroskedasticity

Abstract

Given that autocorrelation tests do not perform well in the presence of heteroskedasticity and in variance-break cases, we present three modified weighted variance ratio tests of autocorrelation. The numerical results show that the proposed tests perform better for small samples. They provide a better approximation of asymptotic distributions and are more powerful when the lag length is mis-specified. The study also applies these tests to data on the daily returns of two companies listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange.

CPEC and industrial strategy — opportunities and synergies

Over the last few years, the Pakistani economy has started to gather some momentum. But despite the fact that growth is picking up speed, there are still many structural problems facing the economy, which are yet to be addressed.

Some of these problems, like the slowdown in industrial growth, stagnant exports, and the persistent balance of payment problem, are closely linked.

If you add this to the fact that Pakistan is in the process of implementing initiatives related to the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), then it is crucial to determine a coherent strategy for the coming years.
