Lahore School of Economics
The Twelfth Annual Conference on Management of Pakistan Economy
30 - 31 March 2016
Technology, Entrepreneurship and Productivity Growth – Where Pakistan stands and where it must go
Productivity isn’t everything, but in the long run it is almost everything. A country’s ability to improve its standard of living over time depends almost entirely on its ability to raise its output per worker.
Paul Krugman, The Age of Diminishing Expectations (1994)
Productivity growth is the foundation for rising living standards and a country’s ability to compete in the world market. Productivity improves when producers’ seek to do better in terms of cost as well as quality of what they produce. And this entails tapping new technologies and finding innovative ways of producing and delivering to the consumer what is produced. And that is what entrepreneurship (in the Schumpeterian sense) is all about.
Subjects to be covered at the conference:
- Why productivity growth matters? Pakistan’s own experience in this respect. The average productivity growth has been clearly low, but the average might hide a wide diversity of experience. The question then arises why/how some firms in the same industry are able to perform better than others.
- Productivity growth depends on investment in more productive/efficient equipment, introduction of new production techniques, and human capital, all that an entrepreneur is supposed to do. Causes of failure of entrepreneurship: macroeconomic management; failure of competition; financial policy/sources of financing/institutions discourage long-term investments. Are there any social determinants of entrepreneurship?
- Technology/innovation – demand side: Do Pak firms actively seek out new ideas, new technologies, talent and adapt themselves to changing circumstance.
- Technology/innovation – supply side (imitation/innovation are practically indistinguishable): Domestic R&D to create knowledge; import of foreign technologies through FDI, subcontracting etc.
- Can entrepreneurship be deliberately stimulated through policy and institutions? Examples of Pakistani success stories: cases where firms have grown from a small size to becoming big.

An entrepreneur is someone who starts with nothing and builds an empire. What makes an entrepreneur unique was the first question Mr. Salim Ghauri, CEO NetSol Technologies asked while addressing the students on November 12, 2014. He told the students that leaders and entrepreneurs do not care about the consequences; they step forward and take actions. Giving examples of famous entrepreneurs he said the difference between them was only that some defined their lives like Richard Branson of Virgin Group and Lakshmi Mittal of Arcelor Mittal. While some changed the world, giving examples of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, whereas some worked to change their countries.

His journey of being an entrepreneur was totally unplanned and the reason he was successful today was because he was a risk taker, a decision maker, one who followed his dreams, created opportunities and believed in himself. He said that one should never run after money. He told the students to be focused, have faith, work hard and success will eventually come to them. Mr. Ghauri said that money would never bring happiness but job satisfaction always would. Fear is the biggest fear of trying something new whereas there is no success without failing.

Mr. Salman Siddiqui from Ehsan Chappal House came to the Lahore School of Economics to deliver a lecture on entrepreneurship on June 19, 2013. The speaker introduced himself to the students and explained how his father started the shoe business. His father had a clear vision and was a man of principles. Mr. Salman after finishing his degree in Business Administration began to work with a brokerage firm but soon realized that it was not what he wanted to do all his life. He had a strong sense of esthetics and nack for designing shoes so he joined his family business. His father owned a small shoe store in Anarkali since 1954. After joining ECS, Mr. Siddiqui opened a store in Liberty Market which was a huge success followed by many more stores opening in different cities of Pakistan. The speaker shared with students that initially it was very difficult to design a formal business plan for shoemaking as there was no business model available in the market to follow. They had to come up with a proper inventory management system which was one of the biggest challenges he had to face. The rule of thumb for ECS management was never to borrow and always expand within their financial means.
Based on his experience, the guest advised the students that Entrepreneurship was all about leaving bookish knowledge behind, recognizing and believing in themselves and getting out of their comfort zones. Mr. Salman said that Pakistan was a land of opportunities and one should never be hesitant to pursue their dreams. Talking about shoe business in particular, he said that the key factor of their success was knowing the customer and then providing an extra value to him. He said that shoe was a technical product which could not be standardized. The sales volume compensates for low pricing of shoes at their shops. Mr. Salman said that they did not focus too much on their competitors. Their products have already been positioned in market well so they do not spend huge amount of money on advertising.

Monis Rahman, CEO, Rozee.pk visited Lahore School of Economics on May 22, 2012and gave a talk at the Mehmood Chaudhry Library, addressing students from MBA and BBA. Starting with a brief introduction of Rozee.pk, the talk followed to discussion on the importance and ‘the power of internet’ in this day and age and how online advertising is growing faster than any other form of advertising today.
The CEO also talked about what type of jobs to choose in the early stages of a career. He mentioned that it was important to get the right experience rather than the right salary package. He also added that it was always better to be an extrovert, and network with professionals, as networking could make wonders for a career.
For the entrepreneurs at the Lahore School, Monis Rahman advised them to “fail quickly,” when coming up with ideas for their own business, always be ready to “pivot” – shift position – towards where growth is, and always be innovative. By failing, he explained, entrepreneurs would be able to learn from the mistakes and come up with new ways to find success. He also recommended minimizing risk in the beginning. “Do today, what others will say five years later, ‘I wish I had done that five years ago’,” he said to the students, and “Don’t wait for anyone to do it for you,” to motivate the students. The speaker also told students about the ‘tremendous’ opportunities available in Pakistan, which were not given attention to [Vicky Zhuang Yi-Yin].
