Rethinking Pedagogy for Teacher Education in ELT/TESL in Pakistan’s Context

Prof. Dr. Samina Amin Qadir, Vice Chancellor, Dean Graduate Programmes, English, Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU), Rawalpindi

Pedagogy is at the heart of teaching and learning process which is influenced by a number of factors. It has been widely proved that an interesting yet multifaceted relationship exists between pedagogy and the beliefs/perspectives, competence/educational level and practices of teachers as they play a significant role in the construction and reconstruction of pedagogical practices which, ultimately, guide the decisions and actions of teachers in the classroom.

The aim of this study is to explore and rethink pedagogy in Pakistan’s context, with special reference to TEFL/TESL, while taking into account the beliefs, competence and pedagogical practices adopted by and for teachers. The pedagogical practices adopted by TEFL/TESL teachers are heavily influenced by three triangular factors: their personal beliefs and perspectives regarding the teaching/learning of English language; their level of knowledge and competence; and the content which they teach. In the course of this research, existing teacher education programmes offered at different levels and institutions in Pakistan have been looked into to find out the current scenario of teacher education in the local context. The findings of the research are discussed and future research dimensions have been brought to light.
