Lahore School of Economics Third Annual Social Sciences Conference

The Third Annual Social Sciences Conference of Social Sciences is being held at the Lahore School of Economics on April 2-3, 2015. Scholars, academician and researchers of renowned universities from all over Pakistan are attending the Conference.


The inaugural session of the day ‘Living by Narratives” opened by Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, the Rector Lahore School of Economics, who welcomed the guest speakers and discussed the importance Lahore School assigns to research in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities. His address was followed by the key note address by the Prof. Shaista Sonnu Sirajuddin, Former Chairperson, Department of English and Dean of Humanities, University of the Punjab. She while elaborating upon the theme of conference discussed the inevitability of man’s dependence on the narratives both as cognitive tools and for the reclamation of individual identities.


The key note address was followed by the first session of the conference on “Contours of our Narratives”. This session was chaired by Dr. Waseem Anwar, (Dean of Humanities, Forman Christian College University (FCCU), Lahore. The presenters for this session included Dr. Sibghatullah Khan (Head, Department of English, Islamabad Model College for Boys), Dr. Saman Saif ( Assistant Professor, Department of English, Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU), Rawalpindi), Ms. Fatima Syeda, (Assistant Professor, Department of English, Forman Christian College University), Dr. Ayesha Bashiruddin (Associate Professor and Head Research and Policy Studies, AKU-IED, Ms. Habibah Hussain Rizvi, Visiting Faculty, Lahore School of Economics and Mr. Muhammad Furqan Tanvir, (Assistant Professor, Department of English, UMT), Lahore. They presented their papers on narratives as political autogynographies, narratives of power, art based narratives and postmodernist narratives respectively.


The second session of the day was chaired by Dr. Shahid Siddiqui, Vice Chancellor, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Islamabad. The theme for this session was “Narrativizing Identities”. Mr. Shahzeb (Assistant Professor, Department of English, University of the Punjab), Ms. Syrrina Ahsan Ali Haque (Visiting Faculty, Lahore School of Economics) Dr. Tayyaba Tamim, (Director Academics, SZABIST, Karachi), Mr. Khurshid Alam (Assistant Professor, University of the Punjab Lahore), Dr. Sadia Zulfiqar (Assistant Professor, Lahore College for Women University), Dr. Saeedur Rahman (Assistant Professor, Department of Social Sciences, Lahore School of Economics) focused on narratives in relation to their ability to generate, perpetuate or challenge individual or collective identities. 


The first of the Conference attracted an audience from diverse fields of interests. Faculty, scholars and researchers from Punjab University, Lahore College for Women University, Forman Christian College, Government College University, University of Management and Technology and young scholars from the Lahore School took part in the interactive sessions.
