Mr. Shahwaiz Khan visited the Lahore School of Economics on March 03, 2018 to deliver a talk on “how investing is done in real life and what happens behind the lens of a broker”.
Mr. Khan started his session by comparing investment statistics of Pakistan with other countries. He explained that in Pakistan the investor base is relatively smaller with only 0.1% of population investing on stock exchanges, compared to other developed countries such as US, UK or Japan where more than 50% percent of the population invests. He also explained the 5 types of indexes that are used on Pakistan Stock Exchange in order to measure the movement of market and then explained the composition of each index and what it represents.
Mr Khan shared his experience as a broker and discussed various types of accounts that an individual could opt for while opening an account with the broker. He specifically narrated how during crisis, everyone panics and starts following a herd behavior, selling off their stocks and leaving the market. He emphasized on the point that rather than just doing what others are doing, one should never act in panic, rather foresee what the next move of the market might be.
Students, especially those who were interested in investing or were already investing took immense interest in the session and asked the speaker a number of questions regarding how to invest, amount of commission to be paid and stock evaluation techniques.
