Challenges of exporting from Pakistan and marketing the country internationally

Mr. Hamid Zaman, Managing Director Sefam Pvt. Ltd visited the Lahore School of Economics on Monday, May 23, 2016 to deliver a lecture on “Challenges of exporting from Pakistan and marketing the country internationally” to the MBA students enrolled in the course of “International Marketing.”
Mr. Zaman began by introducing various types of exports including commodity exports, value added commodity exports, processed commodities, enhanced value added exports, branded item exports, intellectual quality added exports, high technology exports, labor and manpower export and national image export-Marketing your country internationally. He moved on to explain exports from Pakistan and their present day scenario.
Mr. Zaman also highlighted the major challenges for an export business in Pakistan. These included the safety and security concerns, political instability leading to Pakistan becoming a non-conducive environment for foreign investors, lack of research and development, major competition from China (& others), the ongoing energy crisis, lack of availability of skilled labor and the country not being well established as a center for well-developed industry unlike Bangladesh which, with garments exports of over $30 Billion, has become a hub, and as a result many companies prefer to establish offices there, hence contributing to further trade development.
The speaker suggested several measures that the government should undertake and the measures that the businesses should undertake to combat the challenges currently faced by export businesses in Pakistan. The lecture ended with a question and answer session in which all students participated.
